Why Project-Based Learning Beats Passive Video Courses

Here's an uncomfortable truth about online learning: the vast majority of people who buy video courses don't finish them. Completion rates hover around 3-15% across major platforms. That's not a motivation problem. It's a design problem.

The forgetting curve and why passive learning fights it

Hermann Ebbinghaus discovered in the 1880s that humans forget roughly 70% of newly learned information within 24 hours if they don't actively engage with it. Watching someone code on a screen activates recognition memory: the weakest form of learning. You feel like you understand because you're following along. But close the tab, and the understanding evaporates.

Active recall, being forced to retrieve and apply information, is the strongest learning mechanism we have. Projects create that retrieval naturally. When you're building something and you can't remember the syntax, you *think hard*, you look it up, you try it, you fail, you fix it. That failure-repair cycle is where learning actually happens.

What makes a good learning project

Not all projects are created equal. A project copied line-by-line from a tutorial is barely better than watching. A useful learning project has these properties: it's within your challenge zone (hard but not impossible), it has a clear outcome you care about, and it forces you to make decisions the tutorial didn't make for you.
